Michael Matera and John Meehan have already provided incredible ideas and insights around gamification and game-based learning in their previous, individually written books (EXPlore Like a Pirate for Michael Matera and EDrenaline Rush for John Meehan), but their joint effort Fully Engaged is easily the best book ever written for any teacher looking to add gamification and/or game-based learning to the classroom and for any teacher already using gamification and/or game-based learning. Matera and Meehan's narrative styles are entertaining and engaging, but the real impact of the book is the incredible content that they provide. They strike an excellent balance between research showing the importance and impact of adding play to classrooms and tangible, immediately deployable gamified ideas and lessons that absolutely will engage students at all grade levels. Having spent over 20 years in my own classroom looking for new and innovative ways to bring students more fully into my lessons, and another 6 helping other teachers do that in their own classrooms, I can easily say that no book I have previously read comes close to the enthusiasm and energy that radiate from the pages of Fully Engaged. If you are an educator even remotely interested in gamification and/or game-based learning buy this book. You will not be disappointed. Michael Matera and John Meehan understand what my old teachers never did: a fully engaged student is not only more interested in what’s going on in class than what’s on their cell phone, but they are also learning—and retaining—much more than the compliant student is in a classroom ruled by fear. Teachers who already fully gamify their classrooms should also read this book, as there is always room for improvement in each iteration, keeping the game exciting and fresh for both you and your students.I can’t say enough about the help Michael Matera and John Meehan have given me in my classroom. I became a member of their curriculum website EMC2Learning.com towards the end of the last school year, and in the end of course survey I gave my students, they told me that the activities I did at the end of the year (which were based on the resources I got from EMC2Learning, although they didn’t know that) were not only the most engaging activities we did all year, but they were also the most helpful when it came to reviewing for their AS Level Literature of English exam!Helping my students prepare for an exam that could be worth college credit was something I stressed about all year, so I was very excited to see how confident they felt about the exam.I couldn’t be more excited to have the knowledge of Fully Engaged as the foundation for my course design (using the same exact curriculum) plus the EMC2Learning resources for the upcoming school year.
